The Beit Haverim/South Metro Jewish Congregation Religious School is open to children of all families with active membership at Beit Haverim. Our goal is to enhance our children's knowledge of Jewish History, Values, and Traditions and by doing so, instill pride in being Jewish. We are sensitive to the needs of interfaith families. We promote an inclusive and tolerant attitude about families' varying paths toward Jewish identity and observance. Above all, we seek to promote friendships among children and their families, and strengthen connections to the Jewish community.
The Beit Haverim/South Metro Jewish Congregation Religious School offers a comprehensive and integrated curriculum of Jewish study, linking, revisiting and expanding several core areas of study from the youngest to the oldest age groups. Parent volunteerism, in many forms, adds richness to our program and is highly valued. Our program runs for 23 Sunday mornings from September to May. Classes are conducted at Sunset Primary School in West Linn (2351 Oxford St.) from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Hebrew classes are held each week at the Beit Haverim office, at 21420 Willamette Dr. (lower level), West Linn. We serve children from ages 3 and up, and no member's child will be turned away due to inability to pay tuition. Contact the office with inquiries about tuition reductions or further information.
Bubelah (Preschool Class): This program is designed for children ages 3-5. Our preschool education specialist provides age-appropriate exposure to Jewish holidays, Torah heroes and heroines, Jewish stories, music and dance in a safe, nurturing environment. Children must be potty- trained.
Primary Classes: Children ages 5-9 will be placed, based on age and Jewish education experience, in one of our five primary classes (K-4th). Curriculum includes Jewish values and ethics; Torah, prayer, and worship; Jewish customs, life cycle events, and holidays; Jewish history and literature; tzedakah and social action; current events; and Hebrew, Lessons are presented using age-appropriate hands-on activities, arts and crafts, games, drama, stories, and team projects. The program includes field trips, guest performers, fairs and festivities, and music.
Intermediate Classes (5th and 6th): These two grades address the needs of our 10- to 13- year-old students. They are designed to support the development of a strong Jewish identity, to extend students' learning of Jewish tradition, Jewish law and history; to help them think critically about Jewish issues and dilemmas; and to strengthen their Jewish peers and the wider Jewish community. The 5th and 6th grade classes expand upon our primary curriculum, with enhanced intellectual content and more mature activities for their age group.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Class (includes advanced Hebrew): This is designed for students preparing to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and those not intending to have a formal Bar/Bat Mitzvah who wish to continue their Jewish studies. The class includes intensive Hebrew study for students actively preparing for Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Students must be enrolled in the B'nai Mitzvah class during the year prior to the ceremony as well as two years of Hebrew Class. The course includes field trips to accomplish community tzedakah projects. The Hebrew preparation portion provides intensive study and tutorial of Hebrew and prayers, along with individualized preparation for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The Beit Haverim Religious School also welcomes and encourages students over the age of 13 wishing to prepare for Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The course Living and Learning Your Jewish Heritage is designed for those actively preparing to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, those who have already done so, and those not becoming Bar /Bat Mitzvah who wish to continue their Jewish studies.
2007/2008 Curriculum
Once more, Religious School leadership has been hard at work creating the curriculum for a new school year. This year’s curriculum will be the third in our new three-year curriculum, and this year will focus on Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World), Jewish Ethics, Bible, and Jews Around the World. Once more the entire school will on the same subject at the same time, thus permitting school-wide activities and family education days. With age-appropriate classes, our students will all have an opportunity to discuss these subjects in class and bring home their unique perspectives to encourage family discussions. This year, as well, we shall be including in the curriculum some field trips that we believe will enrich the classroom lessons.
Once more, our gifted teachers will be creating lessons based on age-appropriate texts. Our school will be also be offering a special program for our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students.
In the area of Hebrew studies, Rabbi Annette Koch will be teaching all of our classes to our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students - from the introductory through intermediate levels. These mid-week classes meet for approximately 45 minutes. The introductory class (which will again meet on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. until 5:15 p.m.) allows the student to learn the alef beit and work on the basic skill of reading. The intermediate class (again to be held on Wednesdays from 4:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.) focuses on developing these reading skills by learning the Shabbat prayers as well as some of the home rituals. Finally, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah class (which meets on Wednesdays from 5:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.) prepares each student through individual tutoring for his/her moment of honor – being called to the Torah for the first time.
With the assistance of our PTO and parent volunteers, we will continue to offer additional activities, such as our Hanukkah Fair and Purim Carnival.
We hope you and your child(ren) find this curriculum exciting and will allow us the opportunity to share in your child’s Jewish learning in the coming year.
